Vijaya Raghavan, McGill University, Canada
Vijaya Raghavan is a Professor in the Department of Bioresource Engineering at McGill University. His initial work on the effects of compaction by agricultural machines on the structure and productivity of soils has led to recommendations for practices for soil conservation that remain relevant. His subsequent work has been on developing postharvest technologies for storing and drying crops and produce. He has delved into controlled environment storage technologies, and on methods to not only extend storage life of produce, but also improve its nutrition quality. This has led to current studies on hyperbaric treatment prior to storage. Vijaya has made significant contributions to knowledge and development of technologies with enhanced heat and mass transfer for the drying and thermal treatment of crops. He is presently investigating the use of electro-technologies such as microwaves for thermal processing of foods, for disinfesting grains, for pasteurizing whole eggs, for extracting phytochemicals from plant biomass, and for producing biochar.
